How IQ Scores Are Calculated

Modern tests use deviation scoring. The scale sets 100 as the average of the reference population, with a standard deviation of 15 points. Roughly 68% of people score between 85 and 115. A score of 115 means one standard deviation above average on the measured domains.

Common formats include matrix reasoning (patterns in visual grids), number series (next value in a sequence), verbal analogies, spatial rotation tasks, and working memory tasks.
